SUMMARY:HWY 22: Commissioners Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Wyoming Department of Transportation is considering two options for expanding the HWY 22 corridor from two lanes to four or more lanes. These options are shortsighted\, they threaten wetlands and wildlife\, and they will not alleviate traffic congestion. \n  \nOn Monday\, June 30\, at 9:00 a.m.\, the Board of County Commissioners will workshop a letter in response to the proposed expansion. Attend the meeting in person or join Zoom. Please provide comments at the meeting and encourage Commissioners to:  \n\n\n\n\n\nRequest an EIS (Environmental Impact Study) rather than an EA (Environmental Assessment)\, as the latter is less thorough. \nAsk for an alternative option to address congestion\, such as adding turn lanes\, acceleration lanes\, and traffic circles\, rather than just widening the road between bottlenecks.\nConsider the concept of induced demand: when roads are widened\, more people will drive on them\, ultimately leading to expanded roads becoming just as congested as before. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nJoin JHCA on Monday morning and let the Commissioners know we want innovative solutions for our roadways. As a county land use hearings officer\, an elected official\, and as the director of university-based urban sustainability programs. Liberty has provided council and support to USEPA\, state and local governments and nonprofit organizations across the US\, from Alaska to Alabama\, including ongoing work in Montana. He has been a speaker and advisor in Asia\, Oceania\, Europe and the Middle East. Currently Liberty is a member of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Commission. \n\nContributing Speaker:\n\nTodd Wilkinson is an American journalist and author\, and founder of Mountain Journal. He began as a crime reporter with the City News Bureau of Chicago\, Wilkinson’s work has appeared in a wide variety of national publications\, ranging from National Geographic to The Washington Post. Wilkinson is author of several books\, including the critically-acclaimed Science Under Siege: The Politicians’ War on Nature and Truth\, and Grizzlies of Pilgrim Creek: An Intimate Portrait of 399\, the Most Famous Bear of Greater Yellowstone\, which won a High Plains Book Award. Wilkinson authors a longstanding syndicated column\, “The New West\,” recently named ‘best column in the country’ by the National Newspaper Association for small market newspapers. Wilkinson is a resident of Bozeman\, Montana who loves writing about\, and exploring\, the vast Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Summer Speaker Series- Kim Titchener
DESCRIPTION:Learning to Coexist with the Wildlife of Jackson Hole. \n\nJackson Hole is home to a wide variety of wildlife\, including the iconic grizzly bear.  Millions of people flock to this region each year to live\, work and play\, while others call this place home.  Many want to live with the wildlife that share this place\, but are at a loss at how or are not aware that they are having negative impacts on local wildlife. \n\nHuman-wildlife conflicts continue to rise across North America\, as more people venture and choose to live where wildlife roam.  Countless animals will lose their lives each year to vehicle strikes\, habitat loss\, conflicts with people\, and for gaining access to human food and garbage. The list goes on. A recent study released on large carnivore attacks\, attests that half the attacks that do occur\, are human caused.  With this in mind\, what can we as a community do to reduce our impacts on wildlife and reduce the number of attacks we see each year in this region? \n\nJoin Kim Titchener\, a human-wildlife conflict specialist from Alberta\, Canada as she shares her ideas and experiences from working with communities\, governments and industry on living with wildlife safely and helping to keep them on the landscape. \nBear Safety & More’s founder\, Kim Titchener has worked on wildlife conflict reduction programs with multiple government agencies\, communities and industry for 12 years.  She lives in bear country\, and in Alberta this can mean almost any area of the province\, but Canmore is the place she calls home. \nKim soon learned first-hand the challenges we face living with wildlife. Out of the misfortune of seeing so many bears die due to human interface\, and the tragedy we deal with when interactions with bears go wrong\, she was inspired to dedicate her career to helping communities and businesses learn to live smart with wildlife. \nSince then she’s worked on bear conflict reduction programs with multiple government agencies\, and spearheaded the creation and facilitation of WildSmart\, a multi-stakeholder coalition established to reduce human wildlife conflict in the Bow Valley and Kananaskis Country. \nBuilding WildSmart into a nationally recognized conservation strategy and community model for reducing conflict between people and wildlife. SUMMARY:Summer Speaker Series- Embere Hall
DESCRIPTION:Can Wyoming’s wildlife keep pace with climate change? The case of the American pika. \nContemporary climate change threatens wildlife populations across the globe. In nearly every ecosystem\, the places where species live and the likelihood that they will survive\, are changing rapidly. In Wyoming\, climate change is one of five conservation challenges identified in the State Wildlife Action Plan. Behaviors\, which are immediately flexible\, may provide animals with a way to keep up with novel dynamics. We examine how well temperature-sensitive wildlife can adjust to warming temperatures using the American pika as a model organism. Results of our work will inform ongoing agency efforts to conserve wildlife\, and to prioritize conservation actions in the face of shifting climate. \n  \nEmbere is a PhD candidate with the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Wyoming. She is interested in the ecological effects of climate change\, and whether wildlife can adjust to new conditions. Prior to joining the Coop Unit\, Embere served as the Research Director for the Conservation Research Center of Teton Science Schools in Jackson. She received her MS in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology from Iowa State University\, and her BS in Wildlife Ecology & Management from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. \n  \nThis event is co-hosted with the Jackson Hole Bird and Nature Club. Food will be provided by Hole Food Rescue. \nThe Alliance Summer Speaker Series is sponsored by:
