Climb-It Change

The Local Impact of Climate Change on Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains and Specifically Jackson Hole

The Spotted Saxifrage

Human induced climate change is real, and one of the most important environmental issues of our time. Further, it is happening now, across the Rockies and right here in Jackson Hole! Trevor Bloom is a young biologist who grew up locally in Jackson and has been working as an ecologist internationally and regionally for nearly a decade. He participated in the JH Conservation Alliance’s very first Conservation Leadership Institute cohort. Tonight, he will discuss his graduate work where he traversed the entire Rocky Mountain chain to study the response of single alpine wildflower species (Saxifraga austromontana) to climate change and wildfire, and introduce his upcoming science outreach and adventure film:Climb-It Change (www.ClimbItChange.com)! Trevor will also discuss his recent involvement in a new and exciting project to resurrect the fieldwork of legendary local biologist, Dr. Frank Craighead. From 1970-1978, Craighead made weekly observations of the flowering times of over 72 plant species around his cabin near Blacktail Butte, used to write the formative book: For Everything There is a Season. Today, over 45 years later, Trevor in collaboration with Dr. Corinna Riginos, Dr. Geneva Chong, Stephanie Dykema, and the Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative, will begin contemporary observations of the same species to directly measure the response of these flowers to shifts in climate, right here in Jackson Hole. This exciting new project will provide opportunities for citizen scientists and student groups like you to get out in the field and directly contribute to research and conservation in our priceless valley!
