Wolverines regain candidate status under Endangered Species Act

Wolverines regain candidate status under Endangered Species Act

Montana Court agrees with Alliance and conservation partners, awards special protections to wolverines while USFW reanalyzes flawed decision to strip species of threatened status

With less than 300 wolverines remaining in the lower 48 states, this member of the weasel family is threatened by climate change and habitat loss. Last Thursday, the wolverine regained candidate species status under the Endangered Species Act due to a Montana District Court decision. The court agreed with a coalition of conservation organizations, including the Alliance, represented by EarthJustice that the species deserved special protections while the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reconsiders a 2020 decision to deny listing the wolverine as threatened or endangered.

We applaud the Montana District Court’s decision and urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to grant wolverines full protection status before we lose this incredible creature to extinction.
