Town of Jackson to discuss amending wildlife feeding section of Municipal Code on Monday

Proposed changes to the Town of Jackson Municipal Code related to wildlife feeding and bear-resistant trash cans will be reviewed at Monday’s Town Council Regular Meeting.

Help protect wildlife and people and let your Town Councilors know you support the proposed amendments!

Following the recent update to the Wildlife Feeding section of the Teton County Land Development Regulations (LDRs), the Town of Jackson could soon require increased regulations for securing wildlife attractants in town limits. The County LDR update, passed in April but implemented on July 1 (although not enforced until November 1), omitted the Town of Jackson, which is regulated through separate municipal codes and LDR’s. The proposed municipal code language aligns well to the new County regulation and will provide consistency for residents and wildlife, as well as increased safety for both.

Jackson Town Councilors expressed an interest in updating wildlife feeding requirements in the Fall of 2021 and requested staff review options. We are grateful to see the Town move forward with these proposed amendments. Councilors will review the updates at their Monday 6:00pm Regular Meeting. Let your elected representatives know you support this effort and give public comment at the meeting!

For consistency, the suggested changes are similar to what was approved in the county LDRs. The two differences are that the Town had existing wildlife feeding and trash regulations written into the Municipal Code, not the Land Development Regulations, and the Town is proposing requiring bear-resistant trash containers in a “Bear Conflict Zone” only. This zone, created in consultation with WY Game and Fish and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, addresses approximately 85% of past bear conflicts which occurred in town. This Bear Conflict Zone is reminiscent of the County LDRs before the April update and could be expanded later, if needed. The additional amendments for wildlife feeding and securing of attractants would apply to the entire Town of Jackson.
